How to Choose the Right Living Room Furniture

Your living room is one of the most important rooms in your home. This is where you relax in the evenings, spend time with your family and entertain visitors. So it’s important that, for you to make the most of your living space, you choose the right furniture for the room. As well as being comfortable to sit on, your living room furniture also needs to reflect your personality and your home and complement the environment into which it is placed.

When choosing new furniture for your living room, here are some things you should consider:

Space Available

It’s no use buying a plush, comfortable sofa if it takes up most of the space in the living room or half of it is hanging across the doorway. Before you buy, therefore, you should measure up the space available. For additional help, you could also create a floor plan. This will help you to visualise where the furniture will fit and how it will fit around the existing furniture. You should also take measurements of your doorways to make sure the new furniture can be carried into the room.

Who is using the furniture?

If you have young children or grandchildren, you may want to consider more hard wearing or wipe clean furniture to ensure resilience. If, however, the room is being used only for sitting and unwinding in the evening, you can afford to make comfort your primary focus.

Existing Décor

If you’re not planning on redecorating, your new furniture should fit with the existing colour scheme and general ambience in the room. Take photographs of your room to take with you when you go shopping. Conversely, bring home fabric swatches so you can see how the new furniture will blend in.

Furniture Hierarchy

You might have grand visions of a living space fully furnished with three-piece suite, coffee table, occasional tables and a sideboard; but few people are fortunate enough to have that kind of space. So prioritise your furniture. A huge coffee table in a room with a small single chair wouldn’t look right, however wonderful the coffee table might be. Start with the most important item, which is likely to be your sofa and/or chairs and then fill the space from there.
