Can you use any mattress with an Adjustable Bed?

Whether you are experiencing mobility issues, suffering from back or joint pain or just struggle to find a comfortable position in which to sleep at night, an electric adjustable bed can be a huge help. If you’re looking at buying an adjustable bed, you may be able to use your existing mattress, which could save you some money on the purchase. However, it is worth bearing in mind that your mattress may be causing some of your sleep problems.

There are a wide range of mattresses to choose from, each of which benefits your sleep in a different way. But can you use any mattress with an adjustable bed? Let’s find out.

Types of mattress

There are several types of mattress, most of which are compatible with an adjustable bed, though they must have the correct composition in order to work. The main types of mattress which can be used with an adjustable bed are:

  • Latex mattress
  • Memory foam mattress
  • Pocketsprung mattress
  • Air mattress

Latex Mattress

Latex mattresses offer a bouncy feel and can make it easier to get in and out of bed. Latex mattresses are flexible, durable and as they are not manufactured with harmful chemicals, give off no chemical scent.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses mould around the contours of the user. This has the benefit of ensuring that the user’s weight is evenly distributed and fully supported, relieving pressure on the user’s muscles and joints and particularly the spine.

Pocket Sprung Mattress

A pocket sprung mattress works in a similar way to a memory foam mattress in that it ensures even support throughout the user’s body. Tiny, individually pocketed springs combine to meet the contours of the user’s body. This flexibility also makes a pocket sprung mattress more effective at adjusting with the movement of the bed.

Mattress Thickness

In order for the mattress to flex effectively with the movement of the bed, a thickness of no more than 12 inches works best. Any thicker and the mattress will not allow the user to adjust the position of the bed as effectively and the repeat movement may damage the mattress.

When buying an adjustable bed, it is possible to use the mattress you already own, providing it meets the requirements of the bed. However, your mattress is an important contributing factor to your sleep and must be considered.
