How to prevent loss of mobility in the home
As we get older, our ability to move around and do the things that used to come easily to us become more taxing. It’s common for those of us who are losing the mobility we once had to spend lengthy periods in our homes. Unfortunately, this will aggravate mobility lose over time and make such problems worse. That’s why it’s important to attempt to be mobile whenever possible. If you’re stuck at home a lot or have a family member who doesn’t get out of their house much, try to dedicate some time to improving mobility. This can have many long-term health benefits and make life at home much easier.
There are many symptoms caused by immobility, look out for these key few. If you do notice any, make a positive change and follow some of our helpful tips that will follow:
- Isolation and immobility can cause a lot of visible health issues, but the neurologic problems are often overlooked. Depression, anxiety, anger and confusion can be caused and aggravated by immobility. Feeling like you’re unable to live life the way you’d like too causes an immense amount of frustration for anyone.
- Both weight gain and malnutrition can be caused by immobility. If you are immobile your body will use fewer calories, so it can be quite easy to be eating too much food. Likewise, you can easily under eat if you’re not taking care of yourself.
- Cardiovascular issues are one of the most common symptoms of long periods of immobility which can lead to blood pressure problems and in extreme cases even heart attacks.
- Respiratory problems bring the risk of pneumonia, weakening your ability to cough increasing the build-up of secretions in the lungs.
- Loss of muscular strength is inevitable if you are regularly inactive. But the side effects are often ignored, this loss of muscle can lead to deteriorating bone density which in turn can increase the risk of osteoporosis.
Try to stay mobile
It can be difficult to follow a routine to exercise and stay mobile, but it is highly important that you do whatever you’re able to. Even as little as 10 minutes of meaningful exercise a day can help combat increased immobility. If you are a family member try to accompany your relative on a short walk. Engage your brain
Ensure that your mind is kept active too. We mentioned the neurological issues immobility can cause earlier in this article, engaging the brain is the best way to prevent these symptoms.
- Spending time with friends and family is on of the best ways to do this. Check in on your loved ones as often as you can, a quick chat goes a long way.
- Challenging your brain with puzzles of any kind can be a great help; grab a newspaper, a jigsaw puzzle or a mobile device and get solving!
- Practising a hobby or taking up a new one is a great activity for the brain. Doing something you enjoy will help to increase your desire to get up and be active.
Eating well and getting the correct nutrition is important at any age. With the immobile however a good diet is key to maintaining good energy, digestion and alleviating constipation. Speaking to you or your relative’s doctor will provide you with a wealth of information on how to plan for dietary needs.
