Importance of staying active as you age
Regular exercise is about more than just staying in shape. There are numerous physical and mental health benefits associated with regular exercise and that shouldn’t be ignored as we age.
In fact, as we get older it becomes more important in sustaining physical and mental wellbeing.
Here are some of the reasons it’s important to keep active.
As we age, our metabolism slows down. Combined with reduced activity, this makes it difficult to keep the weight off. As well as making it even more difficult to stay active, an increase in weight can lead to other health conditions, such as type two diabetes or heart problems.
Regular activity keeps your muscles strong and enables you to move independently for longer. This makes it easier to move around your home and reduces deterioration of your mobility. Stronger muscles will also help with posture and reduces conditions associated with poor posture.
Reduces the impact of chronic illness
Exercise helps with the immune and digestive functions as well as blood pressure and bone density. It has also been linked to a reduction in Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis and certain cancers.
Regular activity can make it easier to fall asleep at night. Quality sleep also has a positive impact on your physical and mental health and prevents other conditions from arising.
Exercise produces endorphins, a hormone which helps to reduce feelings of sadness or anxiety. Staying in shape also helps to boost confidence, while being naturally strong helps to maintain independence.
